I have two small pups and they are my children. Lola is an 8 year old Maltese and Riley a 4 year old Yorkie-poo. We got both from breeders but moving forward will always rescue. Like many, we did not know what we were supporting by shopping instead of adopting.
At the time that I went Vegan my dogs were eating a frozen raw diet. This was, from what I was led to believe, the best diet for them. As I continued to learn and educate myself on the horrific conditions in factory farms it killed me to continue feeding them this food, but it was best for them. Then I started to do a bit of research. If the meat we are being given is tainted and cancerous what were they getting in the leftover bits that go into dog food? The answer was not pretty.
So I decided to make a switch. I read some articles and books and spoke with my Vet. I cooked for them for several weeks while I searched for the right food for them. My dogs have now been 90% vegan for almost a year and are doing wonderfully. Would they say no to a steak? NO WAY! BUT they are making a small difference and I believe will be healthier in the long run.
My dogs LOVE all veggies and fruit. When I am cutting up eggplant, cucumbers, carrots- you name it- they are right under me waiting for their share. We went through a lot of trial and error, especially with Lola’s allergies, but have finally found our niche!
